Mobility in Germany (MiD) is a nationwide survey of households on their everyday traffic behaviour. It is carried out approximately every five years. The survey was carried out by infas in 2016/17 as well as in the years 2002 and 2008. A special feature of the MiD is the possibility of regional add-ons. Therefore, the study is a joint project of the BMVI and numerous regional partners. Thus, the study not only delivers results for the whole of Germany, but also for Federal States and individual regions. In total, more than 135,000 households were interviewed between June 2016 and September 2017. Out of this, 30,000 are accounted for by the BMVI and more than 100,000 interviews were funded by regional partners.
The central task of the study is to obtain representative and reliable information on the socio-demographics of individuals and households and their day-to-day traffic (such as trips by purpose and type of transport) for a full year. The study Mobility in Germany provides up-to-date data on important factors influencing mobility and forms the basis for transport models. It is important for transport planning, research and scientific research interest and provides the quantitative background information for policy decisions.
The MiD was first conducted by infas in 2002 in cooperation with the German Institute for Economic Research (DIW), Berlin, and repeated in 2008 together with the German Aerospace Center (DLR), Berlin. In 2016/17, infas cooperated with IVT Research GmbH, the German Aerospace Center (DLR) and the infas 360 GmbH.
The results of the recent mobility in Germany study will be available from 2018.
