The innovation survey is a business survey and is representative of industry groups, size classes, and western and eastern Germany. Representativeness is ensured by a stratified random sample with disproportionate drawing probabilities, a sufficient size of the net sample, the implementation of an extensive non-participant survey and a complete coverage of the largest companies. The surveys in 2017, 2019 and 2021 will be conducted as a panel survey and conceptually directly follow the innovation surveys of the years 1993 to 2016 (Mannheim Innovation Panel MIP), which were conducted by ZEW, infas and ISI in cooperation. In particular, the panel character of the survey is preserved over the entire period, which significantly expands the analysis potential of the collected data. In the survey years 2017, 2019 and 2021, the survey represents the German contribution to the Community Innovation Surveys (CIS) of the European Commission.

Method

The survey will be conducted by CIS in 2017, 2019, and 2021 as a long survey with an increased sample size and a long questionnaire, and in 2018 and 2020 as a short survey with a reduced sample size and a short questionnaire. The data will be collected by written questionnaire (PAPI). Companies also have the option of completing the questionnaire online (CAWI). Non-participants are interviewed by telephone (CATI). Here, too, there is the option of an online response (CAWI).
