INSIDE is a scientific study that examines the framework conditions and the implementation of inclusion at general schools in Germany. From December 2016 to May 2021, the study first analyzed the conditions under which students with and without special educational needs learn together at lower secondary level and which approaches are successful. In a second project phase, starting in June 2021, the focus will be on the transition to upper secondary school, to vocational training, a job or other life situations. The goals and ideas that the students have for the time after lower secondary school, the approaches of the schools in preparing and accompanying this orientation phase, and the conditions that contribute to a successful transition are analyzed. In addition to in-school surveys (conducted by IEA Hamburg), various external surveys are conducted with students and parents, for which infas is responsible.

Pupils are surveyed annually by telephone; alternatively, it is also possible to complete the questionnaire online. The parent surveys taking place in 2023 and 2024 will be conducted by telephone.

INSIDE is a scientific project carried out jointly by the Leibniz Institute for Educational Trajectories, the Institute for Quality Development in Education (IQB), the Humboldt University of Berlin (06/2021 – 05/2025), the University of Wuppertal and the University of Potsdam . INSIDE is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).
